How do we get students to pick the right curriculum for a better future?

Posted on August 31, 2010 by Nick Trompert

The school year has started again. As an employer and a representative of a company, that recruits the best talent in the market place for its customers, I always have to pause and think on how we can motivate high school students to enroll in courses to be better prepared for a college or university curriculum, a career in the military or a well-paying job.

Each year the Dallas business community makes a strong commitment to visit every eighth grade class to explain the importance of students taking the right courses during their approaching high school years. Eighth grade is the crossroad to higher education. We have presented this program for many years, but we see students who have less interest in math and science, the foundation to a better paying job. Being a professional athlete or performing artist seems easier to achieve for these students than mastering basic math and science. I worry about our future workforce with many low end paying jobs being phased out with technology.
