Next week our Talent101 team will visit a local middle school to present the Texas Scholars program. The program gives emphasis on math and science and the direct relationship of these courses of study towards a better future and earning income.
Each year we discuss, with the students, the phasing out of low skilled jobs. We talk about tellers being replaced by ATMs, online websites and mobile applications. We show how checkers at stores are being replaced by self checkout and future RFDI technology in packaging linked to your personal information and bank accounts for checkout.
Today I read an article about Google road-test cars that drive themselves http://bit.ly/bQBMLp . Google is road-testing cars that steer, stop and start without a human driver, the company says. The goal is to “help prevent traffic accidents, free up people’s time and reduce carbon emissions,” project leader Sebastian Thrun wrote on Google’s corporate blog. He said a backup driver is always behind the wheel to monitor the software. The cars have traveled a total of 140,000 miles on major California roads without human intervention.
Does this mean we can tell our 8th grade students next week that if this software works, jobs as a truck drivers, limo chauffeurs or bus drivers may also be phased out? This glimpse into the future of what transportation may look like is based on the advances of computer science and the Talent 101 team will keep making the case to students to do well in math and science!
