Some provocative thoughts here on current and future of the US workforce. After decades of reducing expectations, lowering the bar and parental interest, the US is now dependent on importing intelligence. This is evidenced by the number of new citizens H1B and Green card residents flocking to the US. Even more painful to the US economy is the fact we have replaced voracious consumers who had high paying jobs and disposable income with a more frugal group. How can the economy kick start if consumers aren’t buying?

How do we reverse this? Last week, Texas has just lowered Math standards again for High School kids. While many shout hurray, they will be surprised to find out they can’t enter college without Algebra II. We should make the education standard tougher, not easier so our kids can compete with the global competition they now face. Without a college degree, there is no chance at a high paying job.

What electronics company buys the most semiconductors? Here’s a hint: The computer company that’s selling the most computer gadgets is the likely answer. And if you guessed Apple, you’d be right. Texas is home to more than 1,200 different electronics companies, top of the list are Apple, Samsung Electronics Dell, and Texas Instruments Education Technology group to name a few. It is no wonder that Texas currently sits at #2 with over 200,000 people employed in the electronics’ industry. Most of the growth is happening in Austin, TX. This is because of companies like Apple with their $300+ million investment in there Austin facility and Samsung’s $4+ billion investment into the Austin Fab. There must be something great in the water down there because analyst are predicting another 30%+ business surge more Austin this year . More electronics companies will be looking to make Austin home than any other place in America.

In reviewing the spending of semiconductor companies in the past two years, we see Texas rated number 1 in capital investment. A wide range of reasons are given why semiconductor companies pick Texas and are making it their home sweet home.

The International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) brings together the technology of the future from many different companies all into one venue. The show featured more than 250 conference sessions and 850 speakers from the world’s leaders in technology and innovation.
